Tools for Your Memoir Journey

Memoir Writing Prompts

  • Moments of Unexpected Growth

Write about a time when you were pushed outside your comfort zone in a way that reshaped your view of yourself or your capabilities.

Describe the people, challenges, or circumstances that propelled you into this new chapter.

  • A Place That Defined You

Reflect on a location—whether it’s a hometown, school, workplace, or even a single room—that played a crucial role in your life story.

Describe the sights, sounds, and memories associated with this place and how it influenced the person you became.

  • The Advice You Never Forgot

Think of a piece of advice or wisdom that someone shared with you at a pivotal moment.

Write about the context, who gave it to you, and how it changed or affirmed the path you were on.

Did it stand the test of time, or did your perspective evolve?

  • A "Sliding Doors" Moment

Describe a moment when your life could have gone in a completely different direction had you made a different choice.

Recount the decision and reflect on how it altered the course of your journey.

Imagine what life might have looked like if you had chosen differently.

  • The Season of Self-Discovery

Write about a specific season of life when you felt like you were coming into your own—discovering hidden talents, passions, or aspects of your personality.

Consider who and what shaped you during this period, and how it continues to influence you today.
