About Memoir Nation

Memoir Nation is a free community for writers of personal story, memoir, or essay. If you’re writing fiction and you want to be part of our club, we welcome you, too.

We started out in 2018 as a podcast focusing on both fiction and memoir. In 2025, we launched this site and Community, and rebranded our podcast to focus exclusively on memoir.

Memoir Nation has three levels of membership. Paid members get perks (of course), including monthly classes, access to an accountability group, a monthly book club, and more.

Memoir Nation provides inspiration, guidance, structure, and support.

How Does It Work?

You have found yourself on the Memoir Nation website, which is not the same as the Memoir Nation Community. In order to join our Community, you will follow this link and create an account. If you have an account here on MemoirNation.com, please note that the Community (hosted by Mighty) requires its own log in and password.

The Community is really where it’s at—there you’ll find access to events, like our free monthly Feedback Fridays, where community members read their work aloud, occasional parties, and challenges like our annual JanYourStory, designed to help you start, commit, or continue your story, and Memoir Showers, which is a month of free prompts each April.

If you’re ready to start your memoir, continue your memoir, or get guidance and inspiration for the journey that is writing your memoir, we’ve got all your bases covered. So come on over to the Community and see what we have going on!

Our Backstory

Memoir Nation’s cofounders, Grant Faulkner and Brooke Warner, circled each other’s orbits for years in the Bay Area literary scene before launching their popular podcast, Write-minded, in 2018. Leading up to the launch of the Memoir Nation community, they rebranded the podcast to carry the same name.

Grant served as the Executive Director of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) for twelve years. During his tenure, he expanded the organization’s reach and influence in the writing community, growing participation to more than 400,000 writers, including nearly 80,000 young writers in NaNoWriMo’s Young Writers Program. Grant brings his passion for community and his deep belief that our world progresses story-by-story to this endeavor. That passion and belief, burnished by NaNoWriMo, inspires and informs JanYourStory, and we hold NaNoWriMo’s spirit and legacy close.

Brooke is the Publisher of She Writes Press, and former Senior Editor of Seal Press. Brooke has taught memoir in person and online since 2012, often with Linda Joy Myers of the National Association of Memoir Writers. Brooke is a community leader in her own right, providing space and community for her author community at She Writes Press, and also through her various memoir offerings. Brooke has seen through to publication, through her coaching and her publishing endeavors, hundreds of memoirs.

Grant and Brooke’s collaboration is centered in community, a deep belief that our stories change our world for the better, and a desire to support writers to write and finish their memoirs. When you join our community, you’ll benefit from courses rooted in both craft and inspiration; from our podcast and bonus content; from our newsletters (weekly or monthly); and our introductory free download, Crafting Your Memoir, which you access by joining the Memoir Nation Community.
